Romanian Apartment Block Damaged After Drone Strike Near Ukraine Border
A Russian drone involved in an overnight attack targeting Ukraine crossed into Romanian territory and struck a residential apartment building in the city of Galați, triggering fresh concerns over regional security and NATO’s eastern border.
The incident injured two civilians, including a woman and a teenager, and caused a fire in the upper section of a multi-story residential complex. Emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene and evacuated residents while firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Romanian authorities described the event as one of the most serious security incidents affecting the country since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
NATO Reaffirms Commitment to Defend Member States
The drone strike sparked immediate reactions from NATO officials and European leaders. Alliance representatives condemned the violation of Romanian airspace and emphasized their commitment to protecting all NATO member nations.
Romania’s government called an emergency security meeting following the incident and requested accelerated support for air-defense systems capable of intercepting low-flying drones. Military aircraft were reportedly deployed during the attack, but the drone reached the residential area before it could be stopped.
Officials stated that protecting civilians and strengthening border security remain top priorities as military activity near NATO territory continues to increase.
Romania Takes Diplomatic Action Against Russia
Following the strike, Romanian authorities summoned Russian diplomatic representatives and announced additional measures in response to the airspace violation.
Government officials argued that repeated drone incursions near the Romanian border pose a growing threat to civilian safety and regional stability. The latest incident has intensified discussions among NATO allies regarding stronger surveillance systems and expanded air-defense cooperation in Eastern Europe.
European leaders also voiced solidarity with Romania, calling for increased pressure on Moscow and additional support for Ukraine as the conflict continues.
Growing Concerns Over Regional Escalation
Security analysts believe the strike highlights the increasing risks of the war spilling beyond Ukraine’s borders. Romania, which shares a border with Ukraine and is a member of NATO, has reported multiple drone-related incidents since the conflict began.
The latest attack is expected to remain a key topic during upcoming NATO and European Union discussions as leaders evaluate additional defensive measures across the region.
