British far-right commentator and media provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos has been taken into custody by US immigration authorities and is facing deportation, according to officials.
Yiannopoulos was arrested at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana on Thursday, August 27. US authorities said the 41-year-old had remained in the country beyond the terms of his legal entry and was already subject to a final removal order.
Arrest Follows Immigration Enforcement Action
The Department of Homeland Security said Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally through New York City in May 2019. However, officials said he later overstayed his permitted period of stay.
Authorities said an immigration judge issued a final removal order on July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for an immigration hearing. He was subsequently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE.
He is expected to remain in immigration custody while deportation proceedings move forward, according to US officials. The exact details surrounding his detention location have not been publicly disclosed.
A Controversial Figure in Far-Right Politics
Yiannopoulos rose to international prominence as a controversial political commentator known for provocative statements and his involvement in far-right media and political circles.
He previously worked with Breitbart News and became a prominent supporter of Donald Trump during earlier stages of his political career. In recent years, however, his relationship with Trump and other figures within conservative politics has changed.
Yiannopoulos has also been associated with several high-profile political and entertainment figures, including rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West.
Deportation Case Draws Attention
The arrest has attracted widespread attention because Yiannopoulos has previously supported tough immigration enforcement policies. His public statements in the past have included calls for stronger action against people living in the United States without legal authorization.
The Department of Homeland Security has said that Yiannopoulos will remain in ICE custody pending his removal from the country. No detailed public statement from Yiannopoulos regarding the arrest was immediately available.
The case has become one of the latest high-profile immigration enforcement actions involving a prominent political commentator in the United States.
