Man Receives 40-Year Prison Sentence in Brutal Virginia Attack
A Virginia court has sentenced a man to 40 years in prison for a shocking attack that left Danville City Council member Lee Vogler with severe burns across much of his body.
The defendant, Shotsie Buck-Hayes, admitted guilt earlier this year to attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding for the July 30, 2025 assault. The violent incident took place at Vogler’s workplace, where prosecutors said Buck-Hayes arrived carrying gasoline, poured it over the council member, chased him outside, and set him on fire.
Vogler survived the attack but suffered devastating injuries that have permanently changed his life.
Victim Describes Lasting Impact of the Attack
During the sentencing hearing, Lee Vogler addressed the court and spoke about the emotional and physical toll the attack has had on him and his family. His wife previously testified that he suffered burns covering approximately 60% of his body.
Buck-Hayes also spoke in court, offering an apology while continuing to claim the attack was motivated by his belief that Vogler had been involved in a relationship with his wife. Authorities have not confirmed those allegations.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped a separate breaking and entering charge.
Judge Hands Down Sentence Above Guidelines
The court imposed a 10-year sentence for attempted first-degree murder, with five years suspended. For the aggravated malicious wounding conviction, the judge ordered a life sentence but suspended all except 35 years.
Combined, the ruling means Buck-Hayes will serve 40 years in prison.
The prosecution welcomed the decision, noting that the sentence exceeded the standard guideline recommendation because of the extreme violence involved. Officials said the punishment reflects the seriousness of the crime and provides accountability for the life-altering injuries suffered by the victim.
