A late-night altercation in Monterey, California, ended in tragedy after a man reportedly fled a bar fight and later died from injuries sustained in a fall from a hotel patio. Authorities say the incident unfolded in the early hours of March 28 and remains under active investigation.
Bar Fight Leads to Sudden Escape
According to police, officers on patrol witnessed a fight between two individuals near a bar on Cannery Row shortly after 1 a.m. One person was found unconscious at the scene, while the other fled before officers could detain him.
Despite a search of nearby businesses and surrounding areas, including a nearby hotel, authorities were initially unable to locate the individual who ran away. The injured person involved in the fight was taken to a hospital and later released but reportedly declined to cooperate with investigators.
Surveillance Footage Reveals Fatal Fall
Hours later, hotel staff reviewing security footage noticed a person climbing over a patio railing shortly after the altercation. The patio overlooked a rocky shoreline approximately two stories below.
Around the same time, a concerned relative contacted police after the man failed to return home. This prompted a renewed search effort in the area.
Body Discovered Near Promenade
By late morning, authorities located the man beneath a nearby promenade, not far from where he was believed to have fallen. He was transported to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials have not released the man’s identity, and investigators are continuing to gather details about the events leading up to the incident. Police have also urged anyone with information to come forward.
