Jerusalem Sees Heavy Security and Clashes During Annual Flag March

Thousands of Israeli nationalists marched through Jerusalem’s Old City on Thursday during the annual Jerusalem Day celebrations, an event marking Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War.

The large-scale procession moved through the Muslim Quarter under intense police presence as tensions rose between marchers and Palestinian residents. Several participants were heard shouting anti-Arab slogans, while many Palestinian shop owners closed businesses early and avoided the area over fears of violence.

The yearly event, often called the “Flag March,” has become increasingly controversial in recent years due to repeated confrontations and nationalist demonstrations linked to the disputed status of Jerusalem.

Far-Right Leaders Join Procession in East Jerusalem

Senior Israeli far-right politicians, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, took part in the march alongside thousands of supporters carrying Israeli flags.

Ben-Gvir also visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the day and displayed an Israeli flag, a move that further inflamed tensions surrounding one of the region’s most sensitive religious sites.

Israeli authorities deployed thousands of police officers throughout Jerusalem to manage crowds and prevent violence. Despite the heavy security, reports emerged of confrontations between nationalist groups and Palestinian residents near Damascus Gate and surrounding areas.

Palestinian Residents Stay Indoors as Tensions Escalate

Many Palestinian families in East Jerusalem remained indoors while businesses across the Muslim Quarter were shut during the march route. Residents expressed concerns over harassment, vandalism, and violence linked to previous Jerusalem Day events.

At the same time, Jewish-Arab peace organizations and activist groups gathered in parts of the city in an attempt to reduce tensions and support local Palestinian communities. Volunteers formed protective groups near shops and residential areas during the procession.

Jerusalem remains one of the most disputed cities in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Palestinians seeking East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state, while Israel considers the city its unified capital.

Growing International Attention on Jerusalem Day Events

The Jerusalem Day march continues to draw international scrutiny due to recurring violence, provocative slogans, and political symbolism surrounding the event. Analysts say the annual procession reflects broader divisions over sovereignty, religion, and security in the region.

The latest demonstrations come amid ongoing regional instability and heightened political tensions across Israel and the Palestinian territories.
