Former Glam Rock Singer Charged Over Alleged Historical Abuse
Former British pop star Gary Glitter, born Paul Gadd, has been formally charged with four historical sexual offences involving a girl, according to UK prosecutors.
The 82-year-old is accused of one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13 and three counts of indecent assault involving a girl under 14. Prosecutors said the allegations relate to incidents that allegedly took place between 1978 and 1981.
The case follows a complaint made by a woman who reported experiencing abuse during her childhood. Authorities stated that, after reviewing the available evidence, they determined there was sufficient basis to proceed with criminal charges.
Allegations Linked to Events From the Late 1970s
The newly filed charges concern a single complainant and relate to alleged offences that are said to have occurred over several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Officials emphasized that the decision to prosecute came after a detailed review of the evidence and that the matter will now move through the UK legal system. As with all criminal proceedings, the allegations remain subject to court examination.
A court appearance has been scheduled in London, where the case will begin its legal process.
Long Criminal History Overshadows Former Music Career
Gary Glitter rose to international fame during the 1970s as one of Britain’s best-known glam rock performers. However, his music career has long been eclipsed by multiple criminal convictions involving child sexual offences.
He is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence imposed in 2015 after being convicted of sexually abusing three schoolgirls in offences committed between 1975 and 1980. Although he was released on licence in 2023, he was returned to prison shortly afterward for breaching the conditions of his release.
Before that conviction, Gadd was jailed in 1999 for possession of child sexual abuse material. He was later deported from Cambodia and, in 2006, convicted in Vietnam for committing obscene acts involving two young girls before eventually returning to the United Kingdom.
The latest charges are separate from his previous convictions and will be addressed through ongoing legal proceedings.
