Prosecutors Reveal New Evidence in Charlie Kirk Murder Hearing

The preliminary hearing in the high-profile Charlie Kirk murder case continued in Utah as prosecutors introduced new surveillance footage and forensic evidence against Tyler James Robinson, the man accused of carrying out the fatal shooting.

Robinson, 23, is facing an aggravated murder charge in connection with the September 2025 killing of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk during a public event at Utah Valley University. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty if the case proceeds to trial.

The ongoing hearing is intended to determine whether sufficient evidence exists for the case to move forward to a full criminal trial.

Surveillance Video and Forensic Evidence Presented

During the hearing, prosecutors displayed surveillance recordings that they say trace Robinson’s movements before and after the shooting. According to investigators, the footage allegedly shows him arriving on campus, changing clothes, reaching a rooftop overlooking the event, and leaving shortly after a single gunshot was fired.

Investigators also testified about physical evidence recovered from the scene. Prosecutors said DNA found on a towel believed to have wrapped the rifle, along with other forensic findings, connects Robinson to the alleged murder weapon.

Additional testimony described investigators’ reconstruction of the shooting timeline using surveillance cameras, witness statements, and evidence collected at the university.

Defense Challenges DNA Findings

Defense attorneys questioned the reliability of the DNA evidence presented by prosecutors. They argued that the testing methods and laboratory procedures should be carefully examined before the evidence is accepted as conclusive.

The defense also challenged aspects of the crime scene investigation and suggested that some forensic conclusions require further scrutiny.

Robinson has not entered a plea in the case, and the court has not yet determined whether the evidence is sufficient to send the matter to trial.

Judge to Decide Whether Trial Will Move Forward

The preliminary hearing is expected to continue with additional witness testimony and further presentation of evidence from both sides.

Charlie Kirk’s family attended portions of the court proceedings, along with several public figures. At the conclusion of the hearing, the judge will determine whether prosecutors have established enough evidence for the aggravated murder case to proceed to a full trial.

If the judge rules in favor of the prosecution, Robinson will face trial on charges that could carry the death penalty under Utah law.
