A Baltimore police officer has been arrested after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman he had transported to her home while on duty, authorities said.
Officer Daniel Oxendine, 32, faces multiple criminal charges following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault that was reported in June. Investigators said forensic DNA evidence played a key role in identifying him as a suspect.
Investigation Began After Woman Reported Alleged Assault
According to authorities, the investigation began on June 3 after a woman reported an alleged sexual assault and was examined at a hospital. Investigators said Oxendine had encountered the woman during an unrelated police call in Baltimore.
The woman reportedly needed transportation to her home in Edgewood, and Oxendine received approval from a supervisor to take her there. Authorities allege that after arriving at the residence, the officer sexually assaulted her.
A sexual assault examination was conducted, and forensic evidence was collected for testing. Investigators later said DNA analysis conclusively linked Oxendine to the alleged crime.
Officer Faces Multiple Rape Charges
Oxendine was taken into custody and faces six charges, including two counts each of first-degree rape, second-degree rape, and allegations involving sexual conduct by a law enforcement officer with a victim or witness.
Authorities are also investigating whether the officer may have been involved in other similar incidents. Detectives are reviewing evidence and coordinating with other agencies as the investigation continues.
Baltimore Police Officer Suspended Without Pay
The Baltimore Police Department said it was aware of Oxendine’s arrest and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
His police powers had previously been suspended, and he is now suspended without pay, according to the department. Oxendine had been a member of the Baltimore Police Department since 2017.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have encouraged anyone with relevant information or concerns about possible additional incidents to contact investigators.
