Columbia Officer Killed in South Carolina Park Shooting

A police officer was killed and another was injured during a deadly shooting near a park in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday, authorities said.

The incident began after officers responded to a reported domestic dispute. During the subsequent confrontation, a gunfight broke out between police and the suspect.

The suspect was also killed. Authorities have launched an investigation into the deadly incident.

Officer Christopher DeLong Dies, Second Officer Stable

The officer who died was identified as 29-year-old Christopher DeLong, who had served with the Columbia Police Department for approximately two years.

Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook said DeLong is survived by his wife and two young children. The police department and local law enforcement community are mourning his death.

A second officer, David Dymock, was injured in the shooting but was reported to be in stable condition.

Domestic Dispute Call Led to Fatal Confrontation

By the time Officer DeLong arrived, the suspect had reportedly left the area. The woman provided officers with information about the man and his vehicle.

A short time later, DeLong reportedly spotted a person near a vehicle matching the description. Officer Dymock arrived to provide backup, and the encounter later escalated into a deadly exchange of gunfire.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Adam Tyler Dowdy, according to authorities. Police said he had a history of arrests and criminal cases in multiple states.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, with additional law enforcement agencies assisting as the investigation continues.
