A devastating family shooting in Billings, Montana, has left eight people dead, including four children and a 92-year-old woman, as investigators continue working to determine what led to the tragedy.

Authorities said 44-year-old Alan Smith killed eight of his relatives during a family gathering on Sunday, August 23, before taking his own life. The victims represented four generations of the same family.

New details indicate that Smith had reportedly been asked to leave the family home weeks before the deadly attack amid concerns about his behavior.

Eight Family Members Killed During Montana Shooting

The victims included Smith’s parents, Dana Smith, 73, and Barbara Smith, 72, along with his 92-year-old grandmother, Evelyn Smith.

His sister, Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, 39, was also killed, along with four children: Chloe Ireland, 7; Owen Ireland, 13; Charlotte Ghekiere, 12; and Landon Ghekiere, 15.

The shooting occurred while the family was gathered for a Sunday dinner at the Billings-area home.

Police said the suspected gunman later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Family Member Says There Were Warning Signs

A former relative of the suspect reportedly said there had been concerns about Smith’s behavior before the killings.

According to reports, Smith had struggled to maintain employment and spent much of his time isolated. Family members had allegedly raised concerns about him, and he had been asked to move out of the home shortly before the attack.

The exact motive behind the Montana family massacre has not been confirmed by authorities, and investigators are continuing to examine the events leading up to the shooting.

12-Year-Old Girl Hailed as Hero for Calling 911

During the terrifying incident, 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere managed to call 911 in an effort to get help for her family.

Police responding to a report of a family disturbance reportedly heard gunfire near the property. Shortly afterward, smoke began rising from the home, which became engulfed in flames.

The fire caused significant damage and has made the investigation more difficult as authorities search through the remains of the property for evidence.

Officials have acknowledged that some questions surrounding the attack may never be fully answered because the people directly involved in the violence are no longer alive.

The tragedy has deeply affected the Billings community, where more than a thousand people reportedly attended a candlelight vigil to honor the victims and support their surviving loved ones.
