At least 37 people have been killed following a Russian drone attack in Ukraine’s Kyiv region, according to Ukrainian officials. The strike hit an area near the capital and triggered a major explosion and fire, causing widespread destruction to nearby residential properties.

The attack occurred in the Bucha district, close to Kyiv, where emergency teams continued rescue and recovery operations. The death toll initially reported at 27 later increased as authorities assessed the damage and searched the affected area.

Explosion and Fire Cause Widespread Damage

The Russian attack struck a facility in the village of Myla, west of Kyiv. Ukrainian officials said the strike was followed by powerful detonations linked to ammunition stored at the site.

The resulting explosions caused extensive damage to nearby homes and other buildings. Fires spread through the surrounding area, forcing emergency services to carry out evacuations and rescue operations.

Reports said dozens of people were also injured, while the destruction affected residential areas and a care facility. Rescue workers continued searching for possible victims in the aftermath of the devastating blast.

Investigation Launched Into Ammunition Storage

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said authorities had opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Questions have been raised over the storage of ammunition close to residential areas. Zelenskyy criticized what he described as serious negligence and said those responsible would face accountability if violations were discovered.

Ukrainian authorities are examining both the Russian strike and the conditions under which explosives were stored near civilian communities. The incident has renewed concerns about the risks faced by residents living close to military-related facilities.

Deadliest Attack in Ukraine This Year

The Kyiv-region strike has been described as one of the deadliest attacks on Ukraine so far this year. It came amid an intensified wave of Russian aerial attacks involving drones and other weapons.

The ongoing conflict continues to expose Ukrainian cities and communities to repeated air strikes, with civilians and infrastructure frequently caught in the violence. Emergency crews remain at the scene as investigations and recovery efforts continue.

The incident highlights the devastating impact of the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly on communities located near strategic or military facilities.
