More than 10 years after the death of 2-year-old Macy Grace Ditty, her mother, Jeanie Ditty, has been convicted of first-degree murder in North Carolina. The case began in December 2015, when Macy was taken to a Fayetteville hospital suffering from extensive physical abuse and catastrophic brain injuries.
The child remained on life support for two days before she died on Dec. 4, 2015, just days before her third birthday. Investigators later determined that she had suffered at least 40 separate physical blows and injuries that could not be survived.
Child Suffered Extensive Injuries Before Her Death
Emergency responders brought Macy to Cape Fear Valley Regional Medical Center on Dec. 2, 2015. Doctors discovered signs of severe abuse and determined that the toddler had sustained non-survivable brain trauma.
Macy’s father was serving overseas in the military at the time. She remained on life support while he made an emergency trip back to the United States so he could see his daughter before she was taken off life support.
Authorities charged Jeanie Ditty with murder in March 2016.
Photographer Was Asked to Create ‘Afterlife’ Images
In the months following Macy’s death and before Ditty was charged, she approached photographer Sunny Jo about creating a memorial photoshoot.
The requested images were designed to depict Macy as an angelic figure, with digitally added images showing the child with a halo and appearing alongside her mother. One image showed Ditty sitting at Macy’s gravesite while an altered image of the child appeared to place a hand on her shoulder.
Another staged scene showed Macy reading a book on a picnic blanket, with a digitally created version of the child appearing to look toward her mother.
Jo later said he initially believed he was helping a grieving parent. Ditty reportedly offered to pay between $300 and $500 for the session, but the photographer declined payment.
Murder Case Ends With Life Sentence
The legal case continued for years. Ditty’s first trial in 2020 ended with a hung jury, although the vote reportedly stood at 10-2 in favor of a guilty verdict.
A subsequent trial ultimately resulted in Ditty being found guilty of first-degree murder in Macy’s death.
Following the verdict, Ditty caused a disturbance in the courtroom, including shouting and cursing at people present, according to prosecutors.
She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case has renewed attention on the devastating consequences of child abuse and the lengthy legal process that can follow a child’s death.
