Yale Student Faces Charges in Alleged NYC Subway Assault
A Yale University student has been charged following an alleged sexual assault aboard a New York City subway train, according to court records and law enforcement officials. The accused, identified as Ari Shtein, entered a not guilty plea after his arrest in connection with the incident, which prosecutors say took place in late June.
The alleged assault occurred on a northbound R train in Manhattan as a 30-year-old woman was traveling with four children. Emergency responders later transported the woman to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. The case has drawn significant attention due to the seriousness of the allegations and the suspect’s connection to the Ivy League university.
Prosecutors Outline Charges as Defense Rejects Allegations
Authorities allege the incident happened on June 28 while the subway train was approaching the West 28th Street station. Following an investigation, police arrested Shtein on July 8, and he was later arraigned in New York Criminal Court.
He faces multiple charges, including:
- First-degree sexual abuse
- Third-degree aggravated sexual abuse
- Forcible touching on public transportation
- Third-degree sexual abuse
- Four counts of endangering the welfare of a child
Prosecutors requested bail, arguing that the defendant presented a potential flight risk because of connections outside New York. However, the court released him without bail after the arraignment.
Shtein’s attorney strongly denied the allegations, describing the accusations as false and arguing that the prosecution’s version of events is inconsistent with the physical circumstances. The defense also urged the public not to reach conclusions before all evidence is presented in court.
Yale Community Responds as Legal Proceedings Continue
Shtein is a member of Yale’s Class of 2029 and had previously contributed to a student publication. Following news of his arrest, the publication announced that it had indefinitely suspended him while the criminal case proceeds.
Court records indicate that Shtein’s next scheduled appearance in New York Criminal Court is set for August 26. The criminal case remains ongoing, and the allegations have not been proven in court. As with all criminal proceedings, the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
