Pennsylvania Father Faces Murder Charge in Hot Car Death of 14-Month-Old Daughter
A Pennsylvania father is facing multiple criminal charges after authorities alleged his 14-month-old daughter died after being left inside a hot vehicle for several hours.
The 38-year-old man was arrested following an investigation into the tragic incident, which occurred on June 11 in Northampton County. Prosecutors have charged him with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, reckless endangerment, and leaving a child unattended inside a motor vehicle.
Investigation Details Reveal Child Was Never Dropped Off at Daycare
According to investigators, the father was driving both of his children that morning. After dropping his older daughter off at a sports camp, he was expected to take his 14-month-old daughter to daycare.
Authorities allege that instead of stopping at the daycare, he continued with his daily routine. Investigators say he stopped at a gas station before driving to his workplace, where the toddler remained strapped into a rear-facing car seat inside the parked SUV for several hours.
Police said the father entered his office and later returned to his vehicle briefly during the afternoon before going back to work. The situation came to light after his wife contacted him later that day, asking why their daughter had not arrived at daycare. He then returned to the vehicle and found the child unresponsive before calling emergency services while driving toward a hospital.
Prosecutors Cite Evidence of Impairment
During the investigation, officers reported signs that the father may have been impaired. A THC vaping device was recovered from the vehicle, and laboratory testing later detected active marijuana compounds in his bloodstream.
Prosecutors stated that while there is currently no evidence suggesting he intentionally left the child inside the vehicle, they believe he was responsible for safely transporting his daughter while allegedly under the influence.
Authorities noted that outdoor temperatures reached the 90s on the day of the incident, creating life-threatening conditions inside the parked vehicle.
Legal Proceedings Continue
The father was taken into custody on July 2 and later appeared in court, where bail was set at $500,000. Court records indicate he has not yet entered a plea to the charges.
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare for the next stages of the criminal case.
