10-Year-Old Boy Charged With Murder After Infant’s Death
A tragic shooting in St. Louis has shocked the community after a 10-year-old boy was charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 7-month-old baby girl.
Police said officers responded to a home in north St. Louis after receiving reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found the infant suffering from a gunshot wound. The baby was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died despite emergency medical treatment.
The young suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident and now faces murder charges through the juvenile justice system.
Investigation Points to Unsecured Firearm
According to investigators, the firearm involved in the shooting had reportedly been stored under a mattress inside the home. Authorities believe the 10-year-old knew where the weapon was kept and had accessed it before.
Court documents indicate the child allegedly admitted to retrieving the gun and firing the shot that struck the infant. Investigators also learned that another child was present in the home when the incident occurred.
The baby’s 19-year-old father has also been charged. Prosecutors accuse him of failing to safely secure the firearm, resulting in charges that include second-degree murder and child endangerment.
Juvenile Court Proceedings Expected
Under Missouri law, children under the age of 12 cannot generally be prosecuted as adults. As a result, the 10-year-old is expected to remain in the juvenile court system while legal proceedings continue.
The heartbreaking case has renewed concerns about firearm safety in homes where children are present. Law enforcement officials continue to stress the importance of keeping guns unloaded, locked away, and inaccessible to minors to help prevent similar tragedies.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities gather additional evidence and prepare for upcoming court proceedings.
