Tragedy in Tumbler Ridge: Girl Rushed to Hospital
A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada on February 10, 2026 has left a close-knit community reeling. Among the victims is 12-year-old Maya Edmonds, who was struck by gunfire in both the head and neck and is now receiving intensive care at Vancouver Children’s Hospital as she battles for her life. Her distraught mother shared emotional messages on social media, urging the public to pray for her daughter’s recovery.
Maya was one of more than two dozen people injured in the attack, one of the deadliest school shootings in Canada in decades, where multiple students and adults were shot.
Community Grieves and Family Seeks Support
Maya’s family has turned to online fundraising to help cover mounting medical costs and support her mother, who remains by her daughter’s side. The GoFundMe campaign organized by relatives has drawn widespread attention and financial support from people across Canada and beyond.
Local residents and leaders have expressed shock and sorrow, holding vigils and memorials for victims lost and injured in the attack. The small town of Tumbler Ridge, home to just a few thousand people, has been deeply affected by the violence.
Attack Details and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have identified an 18-year-old local resident, Jesse Van Rootselaar, as the suspect responsible for the shootings at both a residence and the school. Before entering the school, the shooter allegedly killed her mother and stepbrother, then opened fire inside the campus. She was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted wound.
Police have said there is no clear motive yet and believe the suspect acted alone. Investigators recovered firearms at the scene as they continue to piece together what led to the deadly rampage.
