Trail of Blood: Key Witness Assassinated and Suspect Found Dead in South Africa’s Police Corruption Inquiry
A deepening crisis has engulfed the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into police corruption following the violent deaths of two central figures linked to explosive testimony regarding state-sanctioned torture and murder.
The unfolding saga centers on the testimony of Marius “Vlam” van der Merwe, known publicly as “Witness D.” In late 2025, van der Merwe provided harrowing evidence to the commission, alleging that officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) tortured and killed a suspect, Emmanuel Mbhense, in 2022. Van der Merwe testified that he was subsequently ordered by a senior police official to dispose of Mbhense’s body in a lake to cover up the crime.
Weeks after delivering this testimony, van der Merwe was assassinated execution-style in the driveway of his Brakpan home, gunned down in front of his wife and family.
The violence continued this week with the death of Wiandre Pretorius, a man directly implicated in van der Merwe’s testimony. Pretorius, a former police reservist alleged to have participated in the 2022 torture incident, was found dead at a petrol station in Brakpan on Saturday. Police report that Pretorius died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a heated altercation with his partner, a serving police sergeant also named in the inquiry. Just days prior to his death, Pretorius had survived an assassination attempt when gunmen riddled his vehicle with bullets outside his home.
Official Objections and Police Response
Law enforcement officials have pushed back against allegations of negligence regarding witness safety. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and the South African Police Service (SAPS) stated that van der Merwe was offered witness protection but explicitly declined it, citing his own background in the private security sector. Regarding the recent death of Pretorius, police have opened an inquest docket, stopping short of confirming suicide until forensic investigations are complete. “We are investigating all leads, including the possibility that these events are orchestrated to derail the commission,” a police spokesperson stated.
Background on the Madlanga Commission
The Madlanga Commission was established to investigate widespread allegations of criminality and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system. The inquiry has focused heavily on the “political killings” task teams and the infiltration of organized crime into police ranks. The 2022 death of Emmanuel Mbhense, the catalyst for the current wave of violence, involved allegations that officers tortured him to confess to a robbery before dumping his remains. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has since confirmed that the investigation into Mbhense’s murder is complete and has been handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority for decision.
With four individuals of interest in the Mbhense case now dead—three executed and one by alleged suicide—fears are mounting that a “clean-up” operation is underway to silence those with knowledge of deep-seated police corruption.
