🚢 Spanish Police Uncover Massive Cocaine Haul Mixed With Salt
Spanish security forces have intercepted an enormous consignment of cocaine concealed beneath a shipment of industrial salt aboard a cargo ship en route from South America to Europe, marking one of the country’s most significant drug seizures in maritime waters. The discovery has led to multiple arrests and highlighted ongoing efforts to thwart trans-Atlantic drug trafficking networks.
🇪🇸 Record-Breaking Cocaine Seizure at Sea
In a coordinated operation off the coast of Spain, law enforcement officers discovered almost 10 000 kg (10 tons) of cocaine hidden under tons of salt on a merchant vessel. The illegal shipment was found during a search of the ship, which was traveling from Brazil toward European ports when authorities intercepted it.
The extraordinary haul, packed in 294 bales, represents one of the largest ever seized from a ship at sea by Spanish police, demonstrating the scale of illicit narcotics entering Europe via maritime routes.
đź‘® Arrests, Towing and International Cooperation
During the bust, officers arrested 13 crew members aboard the vessel following the discovery of the drugs and a firearm. The ship ran low on fuel after the intervention and had to be towed into Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands by Spain’s maritime rescue service.
Video footage obtained by authorities showed police painstakingly digging through the salt with shovels and by hand to retrieve the concealed packages of cocaine — then lining up to carry the heavy bales ashore.
The operation involved support from international partners, including narcotics enforcement agencies from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Portugal and Brazil.
🔍 Looking Ahead: Challenges in Maritime Drug Trafficking
The discovery underscores persistent challenges in disrupting sophisticated smuggling operations that exploit commercial shipping. Criminal networks continue to conceal illegal drugs within legitimate cargo to evade detection, prompting enhanced cooperation among global law enforcement agencies.
