Pentagon Names US Soldier Killed in Iraq During Iran-Related Mission
The U.S. Department of Defense has identified Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, a 30-year-old Army soldier from Fayetteville, North Carolina, as the service member killed during an operation involving a downed Iranian drone at Erbil Air Base in northern Iraq.
Military officials said Swinton died during a controlled detonation of the unmanned aerial system while supporting efforts to protect fellow troops. Another service member suffered minor injuries in the incident, which remains under investigation.
Veteran Air Defense Soldier Remembered for His Service
Swinton enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2017 and served as an air defense early warning system operator. He was assigned to an air defense artillery unit based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and had taken part in multiple overseas missions during his military career.
Senior military leaders praised his dedication and described his actions as part of an effort to safeguard fellow soldiers during a high-risk operation. Swinton is expected to receive several posthumous military honors recognizing his service and sacrifice.
