Carroll County Deputy Fatally Shot During Welfare Check

A large-scale manhunt remains underway in southwestern Virginia after a sheriff’s deputy was killed and another officer was injured during a welfare check at a residence in Carroll County.

According to law enforcement officials, deputies responded to a request from a concerned family member late Friday night. When officers arrived at the home and made contact with the resident, gunfire erupted, striking both deputies.

Deputy Logan Utt, a military veteran who joined the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in 2023, died at the scene. A second deputy was also hit during the exchange but survived after being protected by a ballistic vest. Officials said the injured deputy remains in stable condition.

Authorities Search for Suspect Considered Armed and Dangerous

Investigators identified the suspect as Michael Timothy Puckett, who allegedly fled the area after the shooting. Law enforcement agencies from across the region, along with federal authorities, have joined the search effort.

Virginia State Police, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and several local departments are assisting in the ongoing operation.

Authorities have warned residents not to approach the suspect under any circumstances and to immediately contact emergency services if they have information regarding his whereabouts. Officials described him as armed and extremely dangerous.

Search Expands Near Virginia-North Carolina Border

Investigators have expanded search efforts into areas near the Virginia-North Carolina border. Reports indicate that surveillance and wildlife cameras may have captured images of the suspect moving through rural sections of the region.

Law enforcement officers have urged local residents to remain vigilant, secure their homes, and review security camera footage for any potential sightings that could aid the investigation.

Community Mourns Fallen Deputy

The death of Deputy Utt has deeply affected the Carroll County community and fellow law enforcement officers. Colleagues described him as a dedicated public servant, husband, father, and military veteran who was committed to protecting his community.

Virginia officials have expressed condolences to Utt’s family and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office while pledging continued support for efforts to locate the suspect and bring the case to a resolution.
