The operation, called “Operation Desert Dawn,” was conducted between April 13 and May 1 and focused on areas with high numbers of endangered runaways and vulnerable minors. Officials confirmed that 20 children were safely recovered, while authorities verified the whereabouts of 11 others. Investigators said many of the children were facing dangerous conditions, including suspected trafficking, homelessness, and mental health struggles. The mission involved multiple agencies and support organizations working together to locate and protect at-risk youth.
Operation Desert Dawn Focused on High-Risk Missing Child Cases
Federal authorities said the operation targeted some of the most urgent missing child cases in Arizona. Search teams concentrated on regions in the Valley known for high rates of runaway reports and child exploitation concerns. According to officials, the recovered children included teens believed to be victims of sex trafficking, minors dealing with substance abuse issues, and children missing for extended periods. One teenager had reportedly been missing from Phoenix for more than 18 months before being found. Another child with mental health concerns was also safely located during the mission. Authorities emphasized that many of the children were discovered in situations that posed serious risks to their safety and wellbeing.
Officials Say Operation Helped Remove Children From Dangerous Situations
U.S. Marshal Van Bayless for the District of Arizona described the mission as an effort to protect vulnerable children from abuse, exploitation, and unsafe living conditions. Investigators used techniques commonly applied in fugitive investigations to track leads and locate missing minors. Officials stated that several children have already been reunited with family members, while others are receiving support through crisis centers and rehabilitation services. Law enforcement also noted that the investigation uncovered information connected to potential predators, and additional arrests could still follow as cases remain active.
