Australia Makes Record-Breaking Cocaine Seizure

Australian law enforcement agencies have carried out the nation’s largest-ever cocaine bust after discovering 2.7 tonnes of the drug hidden at a property near Sydney. Officials estimated the street value of the seized cocaine at around A$816 million (US$572 million).

The massive operation targeted an organized crime network suspected of smuggling illegal drugs along Australia’s eastern coastline. Authorities said the discovery represents one of the biggest blows delivered to drug trafficking groups in the country.

Cocaine Hidden in Underground Containers

Investigators found the cocaine concealed inside plastic containers buried beneath specially modified shipping containers with false floors. The drugs were uncovered during a raid on a semi-rural property west of Sydney.

Two men, aged 21 and 25, were arrested after allegedly attempting to escape the scene. Both have been charged with possessing a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported drugs, an offense that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Police Trace Smuggling Route

According to investigators, the cocaine shipment was allegedly brought into Australia through the coastal area near Midge Point in northern Queensland before being transported to Sydney.

The latest seizure follows earlier interceptions connected to the same investigation, including 178 kilograms of cocaine and 142 kilograms of methamphetamine. Authorities said the combined amount of drugs seized during the ongoing operation now exceeds three tonnes.

Officials confirmed that investigations into the criminal syndicate remain active and further arrests could follow.
