Ukraine Drone Strike Sparks Major Fire at Moscow Oil Refinery
A large-scale Ukrainian drone operation struck Moscow and nearby regions on Thursday, causing a significant fire at a key oil refinery and disrupting air traffic around the Russian capital. Officials described it as one of the most extensive attacks on Moscow since the conflict began more than four years ago.
Emergency crews and air defense units responded after multiple drones penetrated the city’s defenses. Several areas reported explosions, while thick black smoke rose above the refinery complex.
Oil Facility Targeted as Fires Break Out
The attack hit the Moscow oil refinery in the southeastern part of the city, an important fuel production facility supplying gasoline and diesel to the region. Authorities said several drones reached the site despite active air defense systems.
Firefighters were deployed to control the blaze, while nearby roads were temporarily closed. Reports also indicated damage to other buildings and infrastructure in surrounding districts.
The refinery had already been targeted earlier in the week, highlighting Ukraine’s continued focus on Russian energy facilities.
Flights Disrupted and Injuries Reported
The drone assault caused disruptions at major airports serving Moscow, with some flights delayed or suspended for safety reasons. Authorities also reported injuries and damage to residential and commercial properties.
Videos shared online showed smoke rising across parts of the capital, though independent verification of all footage remains difficult.
Russia claimed hundreds of drones were intercepted overnight, but several managed to reach their intended targets.
Tensions Rise as Conflict Intensifies
The latest strike marks a significant escalation in the long-range drone campaign between Ukraine and Russia. Kyiv has increasingly targeted energy infrastructure deep inside Russian territory, while Moscow continues missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.
With diplomatic efforts making little progress, both sides appear to be intensifying military operations, raising concerns about further escalation and wider economic consequences.
