Armed Attack Hits Niamey Airport
Armed assailants launched an attack early Thursday on Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, the capital of Niger, sparking explosions and exchanges of gunfire. Witnesses reported hearing blasts and sustained shooting around the airport area as security personnel moved in to contain the situation.
According to security officials, the attackers managed to breach airport defenses before troops responded to push them back. Authorities have not yet confirmed who carried out the assault.
Security Forces Tighten Control Around Airport
Following the attack, soldiers established checkpoints and carried out searches on roads leading to the airport. The area was heavily secured as authorities worked to restore order and assess the situation.
Residents reported hearing sporadic gunfire for an extended period, raising concerns about security in the capital. Officials have not released information regarding casualties or damage.
Second Major Airport Attack in 2026
The latest incident marks the second attack on Niamey’s international airport this year. A previous assault in January targeted military assets located near the airport complex and prompted authorities to strengthen security measures.
Despite increased protection, militant violence continues to pose a major challenge across Niger and the wider Sahel region. Analysts have warned that strategic facilities remain attractive targets for extremist groups operating in the area.
