Former U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly exploring aggressive military options targeting Iran’s Kharg Island, a critical oil export hub in the Persian Gulf. The move is being considered as part of broader efforts to force Iran to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.

Strategic Island at the Center of Global Oil Supply

Kharg Island plays a crucial role in Iran’s economy, handling nearly 90% of the country’s crude oil exports. Located just off Iran’s coast, the island serves as a major terminal connecting oil fields to international markets, making it one of the most valuable energy assets in the region.

Any disruption or control of the island could significantly impact Iran’s revenue and global oil supply chains. With the Strait of Hormuz already facing disruptions, energy markets have seen rising prices and increased uncertainty.

Blockade or Occupation Under Consideration

According to multiple reports, Trump’s team is evaluating options that include either blockading the island or deploying forces to seize control of it. The goal would be to pressure Tehran into allowing safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

These discussions follow recent U.S. military actions in the region, including airstrikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure on Kharg Island. While no final decision has been made, the possibility of direct intervention signals a major escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Risks of Escalation and Global Impact

Analysts warn that any attempt to occupy or blockade Kharg Island could trigger strong retaliation from Iran, potentially widening the conflict across the Middle East. The island’s proximity to the Iranian mainland also makes it vulnerable to counterattacks using missiles, drones, and naval forces.

A prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz—through which a significant portion of the world’s oil passes—could further strain global energy markets, increase fuel prices, and impact economies worldwide.
