Shooting at Teotihuacán Pyramids Leaves Tourist Dead, Injures Dozens in Rare Attack 78c3b9d1 2c42 46b9 bbcb fed4d3f45d8b 28dc3833

A peaceful day at one of Mexico’s most iconic archaeological landmarks turned into chaos when a gunman opened fire at the Teotihuacán pyramids. The attack left a Canadian tourist dead and more than a dozen others injured, marking a rare and deeply alarming act of violence at a globally recognized heritage site.

Gunfire Erupts at Historic Tourist Site

Authorities say the shooting unfolded around midday at the Pyramid of the Moon, where the attacker began firing at visitors from an elevated position. Witnesses described panic as tourists scrambled for safety, with some taking cover while others attempted to flee the area.

At least one person—a Canadian woman—was killed in the attack, while several others from different countries, including the United States and Colombia, were among the injured. Some victims suffered gunshot wounds, while others were hurt during the chaotic escape.

Suspect Dies at Scene, Motive Unclear

Officials confirmed that the gunman died at the scene after turning the weapon on himself. Law enforcement recovered a firearm and additional weapons, and an investigation is now underway to determine what led to the attack.

Early reports suggest the assailant fired multiple rounds, creating widespread fear among visitors at the site, which is typically considered safe for both local and international tourists. The motive behind the shooting has not yet been established.

Security Concerns Rise at Major Landmark

Teotihuacán, located near Mexico City, is one of the country’s most visited cultural destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Incidents of this nature are extremely rare at the location, making the attack particularly shocking.

Government officials have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged a full investigation. The incident has also raised concerns about safety at major tourist attractions, especially as Mexico prepares to host large international events in the near future.
