Senior Church Leader in Lincoln Arrested on Suspicion of Sexual Assault

Senior Church Leader in Lincoln Arrested on Suspicion of Sexual Assault bc84fda4 1a60 4938 b80e 06814adbd5ff

A senior figure in the Church of England serving as Bishop of Lincoln has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault following a complaint to safeguarding authorities. The 68-year-old clergyman was released on conditional bail as police continue inquiries into allegations dating from 2018 to 2025.

Police Arrest and Investigation Underway

Lincolnshire Police confirmed the arrest of a 68-year-old man in connection with an ongoing probe into a reported sexual assault allegation. Officers said the arrest relates to an alleged incident involving a male victim that spans several years up to 2025. The bishop has since been released on bail while police continue their enquiries.

Church Response: Suspension and Support Measures

The Diocese of Lincoln issued a statement confirming that the bishop has been suspended from his religious duties pending the outcome of the investigation. The suspension follows a formal complaint referred to the Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team and appropriate statutory authorities. No specifics of the allegation have been made public.

During the suspension period, diocesan leadership responsibilities will be assumed by another senior cleric. The diocese has also emphasised that support is available for anyone affected and noted the situation is deeply unsettling for many.

Background and Leadership Transition

The arrested prelate was appointed Bishop of Lincoln in 2023, after previously serving in other senior roles within the Church of England. His position also included involvement in national affairs as a member of the House of Lords. The diocese said interim arrangements are in place to ensure continuity of leadership while safeguarding procedures play out.
