A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after an amateur footballer died following a one-punch assault outside a leisure centre in Scotland.
The victim, 27-year-old Andrew Lees, suffered fatal injuries after being struck during an incident outside Renfrew Leisure Centre in November 2023. The tragic case shocked the local football community and left family and friends devastated.
Fatal Blow Led to Severe Neck Injury
According to court proceedings, the victim had spent the evening socializing after attending a football match before the confrontation took place late at night.
The attacker, Leon Beagan, punched Lees once in the head during the incident. Medical experts later confirmed that the blow caused a rupture to an artery in the victim’s neck, leading to catastrophic bleeding on the brain.
Emergency responders rushed Lees to the hospital, but he later died from his injuries.
Court Hears Emotional Impact on Family
During sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow, the judge described the death as a heartbreaking tragedy and acknowledged the deep suffering experienced by the victim’s loved ones.
Andrew Lees, affectionately known as “Panda” among friends and teammates, was remembered as a kind and popular figure within the amateur football scene.
The court heard emotional statements about the lasting impact his death has had on his family, especially his mother, who lost her only child.
Seven-Year Prison Sentence Handed Down
Beagan had previously been convicted of culpable homicide before receiving his prison sentence this week.
Investigators relied on witness accounts and CCTV footage to piece together the events leading up to the fatal assault. Authorities said the incident highlighted the devastating consequences that can result from a single act of violence.
The case has once again sparked conversations around public violence and the dangers of one-punch attacks.
