Hero Security Guard Praised for Saving Lives During Mosque Attack
Amin Abdullah, a longtime security guard at the Islamic Center of San Diego, is being honored for his bravery after he was killed while trying to protect worshippers during a deadly shooting attack on May 18.
Authorities said Abdullah’s quick actions helped prevent even greater tragedy inside the mosque, where nearly 140 children were present at the time of the shooting. Officials believe his efforts delayed the attackers and gave families and staff valuable time to seek safety.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl described Abdullah’s actions as “heroic,” saying his courage likely saved many lives during the terrifying incident.
The attack claimed the lives of three community members before the two teenage suspects were later found dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds nearby. Investigators are treating the case as a possible hate crime after discovering extremist and anti-Islamic material connected to the suspects.
Daughter Shares Emotional Tribute to Her Father
During an emotional public appearance, Abdullah’s daughter Hawaa remembered her father as a loving parent, role model, and protector.
She said her father always put the safety of others first and took his responsibilities at the mosque seriously. According to family members, Abdullah often remained alert during his shifts because he worried about protecting the community.
“He was the absolute best dad in the world,” she said while surrounded by relatives and supporters.
Friends and members of the Islamic Center also described Abdullah as a kind and welcoming presence who greeted visitors warmly every day.
Community Calls Victims Heroes and Martyrs
The San Diego Muslim community has united in mourning following the tragedy. Community leaders praised not only Abdullah but also the two other victims, Nader Awad and Mansour Kaziha, who reportedly helped others during the attack.
Religious leaders called the men heroes whose sacrifices prevented a far deadlier outcome. Vigils and memorial gatherings have been held across the city as residents continue grieving the loss.
A fundraising campaign launched to support the victims’ families has already raised millions of dollars from supporters around the world.
Officials confirmed the FBI and local law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate the motive behind the shooting.
Investigation Continues Into Suspected Hate Crime
Authorities say the teenage suspects arrived heavily armed and wearing tactical gear before opening fire at the mosque. Police later recovered weapons, extremist writings, and hate-related material connected to the attack.
The shooting occurred during Dhul Hijjah, one of the holiest periods in the Islamic calendar, making the tragedy even more painful for the Muslim community.
Security has since been increased at religious centers across the region as investigators work to determine the full timeline leading up to the attack.
