Guyanese Business Leader Facing U.S. Fraud Charges Named New Opposition Leader in Parliament

Guyanese Business Leader Facing U.S. Fraud Charges Named New Opposition Leader in Parliament Jan 26 2026 11 59 45 PM

In a dramatic turn of events, Guyana’s National Assembly has elected prominent businessman Azruddin Mohamed as Leader of the Opposition, despite ongoing legal battles in the United States where he faces serious fraud and corruption charges. The decision by opposition lawmakers highlights a deep divide in Guyanese politics and raises questions about legal accountability and democratic norms.

Mohamed’s Controversial Rise to Opposition Leadership

Lawmakers from the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party backed Mohamed’s elevation to opposition leader on Monday, even as he confronts extradition efforts from U.S. authorities alleging involvement in fraud and money laundering schemes. Mohamed’s party, founded less than a year ago, quickly became the second-largest force in Parliament after winning 16 seats in the September general election.

Despite the election’s swift conclusion—reported to have taken only minutes—critics inside and outside Parliament expressed concern about installing a political leader under indictment. Some argued the vote could tarnish Guyana’s international reputation and hamper legislative integrity.

Legal Troubles and Extradition Fight

Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, have been charged by a U.S. federal grand jury in Florida with multiple counts, including wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering tied to alleged gold export schemes through their company, Mohamed’s Enterprise. Prosecutors assert the charges involve tax evasion and attempts to defraud both U.S. and Guyanese authorities.

U.S. officials have sought the extradition of the father-son duo, initiating proceedings in Guyanese courts that Mohamed’s legal team is actively contesting. The extradition request has been a source of political and legal friction, with his supporters calling the charges politically motivated and opponents warning of ethical risks in leadership.

Political Fallout and Public Reaction

The election of Mohamed has drawn mixed reactions from political circles. Some opposition members defended the choice as reflecting voter will, while others—both within Guyana and international observers—questioned the wisdom of elevating an indicted figure to such a high-profile legislative role. Critics say it could erode public trust and complicate Guyana’s relations with Western governments.

Supporters, meanwhile, view his leadership as a chance to shake up the status quo and push forward a new agenda despite legal challenges. The controversy is likely to persist as extradition hearings unfold and parliamentary duties continue in the months ahead.
