Former NICU Nurse Receives Prison Sentence in Child Abuse Case
A former neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse in Virginia has been sentenced to three years behind bars after admitting no contest to multiple child abuse charges involving premature infants. The case drew national attention after several babies suffered unexplained fractures and injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital NICU.
The 27-year-old former nurse was convicted on nine felony child abuse counts connected to incidents that occurred between 2023 and 2024. Authorities initially sought a much longer sentence, but most of the prison term was suspended under a plea agreement.
Investigation Began After Babies Suffered Mysterious Injuries
Hospital officials launched an internal investigation after multiple newborns were found with fractures and bruises that doctors could not immediately explain. Similar cases had reportedly surfaced earlier, raising concerns among staff and prompting a broader review.
Investigators later examined surveillance footage and accused the nurse of using excessive force and improper handling methods while caring for the infants. Prosecutors said these actions resulted in broken bones and other injuries.
One of the affected babies suffered a fractured tibia, leading authorities to expand the investigation and review previous incidents.
Nursing License Revoked Permanently
Following the criminal proceedings, the former nurse’s license was revoked, permanently preventing her from working in nursing or other healthcare-related professions. As part of the agreement, she is also barred from jobs involving minors or vulnerable adults.
Hospital representatives previously stated they were deeply saddened by the events and cooperated fully with law enforcement throughout the investigation.
The case has sparked renewed discussions about patient safety, hospital oversight, and the importance of monitoring vulnerable patients in neonatal intensive care units.
