Mail Delivery Turns Controversial in Lauderhill

A postal worker in Lauderhill, Florida, has been arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty after surveillance video allegedly showed him spraying three dogs with pepper spray while on his mail route. The incident, which reportedly happened on January 2, prompted a police investigation and led to his arrest on three counts late last month.

The 47-year-old man was booked into the Broward County Main Jail, where he remains held on a bond set at $3,500. Authorities confirm the case is still unfolding, and no plea or attorney has been publicly announced.

Surveillance Footage Spurs Action

The arrest followed public airing of surveillance footage showing the postal worker approaching a fenced yard where three small Shih Tzu-poodle mixes were barking. The video appears to show him repeatedly using pepper spray on the dogs before moving on with his delivery route.

The owner of the dogs, who identified them as a mother and her two puppies, stated her pets were attempting only to bark at the worker and posed no real threat. According to her account, the animals reacted by digging into the dirt after being sprayed.

Local law enforcement interviewed the postal worker after the footage surfaced. He reportedly called in sick the same day the video aired, before later being taken into custody without incident.

USPS Employment Status Under Review

The United States Postal Service has confirmed the worker had been a postal employee for several years, but said his current status is pending an internal review. It’s not yet clear whether he has been suspended or terminated in the wake of the charges.

Animal welfare advocates note that pepper spray can cause temporary pain, eye irritation, and discomfort in dogs, and recommend prompt veterinary evaluation when exposure occurs.

Police are urging anyone with additional information about the case to contact the Lauderhill Police Department.
