Deadly Firefight in Nightlife District

The shooting erupted just before 2 a.m. near a well-known bar in Austin’s Sixth Street area, a hotspot for nightlife and college students. The suspected gunman, identified by authorities as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, opened fire on patrons and bystanders, killing three people and injuring 14 others in what officials described as a chaotic scene. Police on patrol quickly engaged the shooter, fatally striking him and ending the attack.

Several of the wounded remain in critical condition, and hospitals are treating victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders praised the rapid law enforcement response for preventing even greater loss of life.

FBI Investigates Possible Terror Motivation

Federal authorities, including the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, are assisting the Austin Police Department and are examining whether the attack could qualify as an act of terrorism. Officials pointed to “indicators” found on the suspect and in his vehicle that suggest a possible nexus to extremist motivations, although no definitive conclusion has been reached.

Investigators noted that the suspect’s attire featured symbols including an Iranian flag theme and messages that may reflect ideological influences. Officials are also exploring whether recent global events could have inspired the violence, but caution that the probe remains in its early stages.

Ongoing Inquiry and Community Impact

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims as families are being notified. Local and state officials have condemned the attack, expressing support for those affected and urging calm as the investigation continues. 🔎

Law enforcement agencies are expected to release more information in the coming days as forensic analysis and intelligence reviews progress. Public safety measures have been increased in the area to reassure residents and visitors.
