Deadly Dorm Shooting at Kentucky State University: One Student Dead, Another Wounded

Deadly Dorm Shooting at Kentucky State University: One Student Dead, Another Wounded Kentucky Campus Shooting 79061 e1765324591243

Shooting Rocks KSU Campus — Student Killed, Another Hurt

A student has died and another remains critically wounded after gunfire erupted Tuesday outside a residence hall at Kentucky State University (KSU) in Frankfort, Kentucky. Police captured the suspect — not a university student — and described the attack as an isolated incident. Campuswide lock-down procedures were immediately enacted.

According to the police, the suspect was taken into custody within minutes. Both victims are confirmed to be KSU students. The injured student was transported to hospital and, although in critical condition, is reported to be stable.

Rapid Response — Safety Protocols Kick In

Authorities say the emergency response was swift. Upon receiving reports of an “active aggressor,” campus and city police converged on the site — Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall — cordoned off the area, and secured the site.

The suspect, Jacob Lee Bard, 48, of Evansville, Indiana, is in custody and has been charged with murder and first-degree assault. Campus authorities emphasised that the incident appears to be isolated and there is no continuing threat to students or staff.

In a joint message, KSU officials and the campus police confirmed they are providing support and counselling to families, students, and staff — and have suspended classes, exams, and other campus activities for the remainder of the week. Students have been given the option to go home if they wish.

A Troubling Pattern — Second Dorm Shooting in Four Months

This tragic event marks the second shooting at or near dormitories at Kentucky State University in just four months. In August 2025, two people were wounded by gunfire near the same residence hall area. No arrests were made in that earlier incident. Officials now face renewed pressure to review campus security protocols and consider additional measures to protect students.
