California Women Face Murder Charges in Elder Neglect Case
Two sisters in California are facing serious criminal charges months after their elderly mother was found dead inside her apartment in San Diego. Authorities allege that the women failed to provide proper care, leading to the death of the 81-year-old woman.
Investigators said emergency crews responded to a late-night call on March 6 after family members reported that the woman was unresponsive. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Autopsy Revealed Death Caused by Positional Asphyxia
According to investigators, the victim was discovered face-down in a narrow space between a pullout couch and its frame. Officials believe she had remained trapped in that position for at least 15 hours.
A medical examination later determined that she died from positional asphyxia, with neglect listed as a contributing factor. Authorities ruled the death a homicide.
Investigators stated that there was no evidence anyone attempted to move the woman or seek timely medical assistance.
Father Also Allegedly Suffered Neglect
During the investigation, authorities found that the sisters, aged 52 and 53, were responsible for caring for both parents. Their 88-year-old father was also reportedly living under unsafe conditions and had allegedly been neglected.
Officials noted that concerns about the quality of care provided to the elderly couple had been raised in the past.
The two women were arrested on June 4 and booked into a women’s detention facility. They have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with their mother’s death, along with elder abuse charges related to their father. Authorities said they are currently being held without bail.
