Bronx Shooting Tragedy: Beloved Senior Killed by Stray Bullet in Mott Haven 6a6d4867 ad56 4473 af3c c37cacefc9e5

A quiet evening in the Bronx turned tragic when a 78-year-old man was fatally struck by a stray bullet just steps from his home in Mott Haven. The victim, widely known and loved in the community, was sitting outside when gunfire erupted nearby, leaving residents shaken and demanding answers.

Stray Bullet Turns Deadly Near Home

Authorities say the shooting occurred late at night outside a residential complex on Alexander Avenue. The victim, identified as Edgar Spence, was seated outdoors when gunfire broke out, and a bullet struck him in the torso.

Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he later died from his injuries. Investigators believe he was not the intended target, pointing to ongoing violence in the area as a possible factor behind the incident.

Community Mourns ‘Grandfather of the Block’

Neighbors described Spence as a central figure in the community, often seen socializing outdoors with friends and offering guidance to younger residents. Many referred to him as the “grandfather of the block,” highlighting the deep emotional impact of his loss.

Following the shooting, residents created a memorial with candles and tributes near the scene, expressing grief and frustration over the senseless violence. Community members said the tragedy has left many feeling unsafe even in familiar spaces.

Investigation Ongoing, No Arrests Yet

Police have not announced any arrests and continue to review surveillance footage and gather evidence. Officials are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to identify those responsible.

The incident has renewed calls for stronger action to address gun violence, particularly in neighborhoods where innocent bystanders are increasingly at risk. Local leaders and residents alike are calling for accountability and preventive measures to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
