A Series of Threatening Texts Led Up to Deadly Attack
A murder investigation in Utah has uncovered a disturbing series of text messages that investigators believe foreshadowed a deadly stabbing.
Authorities say a 28-year-old man was fatally stabbed outside his residence in Springville on July 11. Emergency responders found the victim suffering from critical stab wounds, and despite medical treatment, he later died at a hospital. Police have arrested 23-year-old Jaxson Clift in connection with the killing and filed multiple felony charges against him.
Police Say Messages Show Escalating Threats
According to investigators, the victim and the suspect had known each other for a short time before their relationship turned hostile. Court documents allege the victim received increasingly aggressive text messages beginning the day before the stabbing.
The messages reportedly challenged the victim to confront the suspect and included statements suggesting the suspect knew where the victim worked and would soon find him. Shortly before the attack, another message allegedly referenced the victim’s home address, raising investigators’ concerns that the threats were becoming increasingly personal.
Police believe the victim left his residence after receiving one of the final messages. Minutes later, authorities received a report of the stabbing.
Final Texts Sent Even After the Attack
Investigators also allege the suspect continued sending messages after the stabbing had already occurred. One of the final texts reportedly warned others not to interfere with the situation.
The victim’s girlfriend told police he had been arguing with someone through text messages before stepping outside. She said he returned moments later with severe injuries.
The suspect has been charged with aggravated murder, aggravated assault, obstruction of justice, and criminal mischief. Court records have not indicated whether he has entered a plea or retained legal counsel. The investigation remains ongoing.
