Vienna prosecutors have lodged terrorism and related charges against a 21-year-old man accused of orchestrating a planned attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Austria during the summer of 2024. The case highlights ongoing counterterrorism efforts and comes more than a year after authorities say they disrupted a potential threat linked to extremist ideology.
Terror Charges Filed After Foiled Concert Plot
Austrian public prosecutors announced on Monday that they have charged the unnamed 21-year-old with multiple offenses, including terrorism, in connection with an alleged plot to target a concert by global pop star Taylor Swift in Vienna in August 2024.
Legal filings allege the suspect declared allegiance to an extremist group and was involved in distributing propaganda online. Investigators claim he sought instructions on constructing a shrapnel bomb using triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a highly unstable explosive often associated with militant attacks, and produced a small amount of the substance.
Attempts to Arm and International Intelligence Helped Disrupt Plan
Prosecutors also say the suspect made repeated attempts to illegally acquire weapons outside Austria with the intent to bring them back into the country. He was arrested in August 2024 in Wiener Neustadt, a town near Vienna, just before the first of several scheduled concerts.
Officials have noted that U.S. intelligence support played a key role in helping Austrian authorities identify and disrupt the potential attack, leading to the cancellation of three concert dates amid safety concerns.
Court Proceedings and Potential Penalties
The case is moving forward in the Austrian legal system, with prosecutors preparing to present evidence in Wiener Neustadt. If convicted on terrorism charges and related offenses, the defendant could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years under Austria’s criminal code. His defense has previously denied the allegations but has not provided detailed rebuttals in court filings.
