A Florida-based Haitian-American pastor accused of helping organize a plot that led to the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse is facing trial in federal court in Miami. Christian Emmanuel Sanon, 67, has denied involvement in any plan to kill or kidnap Moïse and could face life in prison if convicted.

Trial Begins Five Years After Haiti President Was Killed

Sanon’s trial marks another major development in the long-running U.S. investigation into Moïse’s assassination. The Haitian president was killed on July 7, 2021, when armed attackers entered his residence near Port-au-Prince. His wife, Martine Moïse, survived the assault and is expected to testify during the proceedings.

U.S. prosecutors allege that South Florida played a significant role in planning and financing the operation. Sanon, who has lived in Florida for many years, is accused of recruiting people involved in the broader effort and seeking a path to Haiti’s presidency after Moïse was removed.

Sanon has pleaded not guilty to charges that include conspiracy to kill or kidnap a person outside the United States.

Prosecutors and Defense Present Different Accounts

Federal prosecutors are expected to argue that Sanon’s political ambitions were connected to the conspiracy. Several people who have already been convicted have also identified him as an important figure in the plot.

Sanon’s attorneys, however, maintain that while their client wanted to become Haiti’s president, he was not aware of or involved in a plan to assassinate Moïse. His defense is expected to argue that other participants eventually moved away from Sanon and pursued different political figures as potential successors.

The case has involved evidence gathered from communications, financial records and electronic devices, along with testimony from people who previously pleaded guilty or were convicted.

Assassination Deepened Haiti’s Political and Security Crisis

Moïse’s death intensified an already severe political crisis in Haiti. The country has remained without an elected president since the assassination, while armed gangs have expanded their influence and violence has continued to disrupt daily life.

U.S. authorities have prosecuted numerous people in connection with the killing, including former Colombian soldiers and individuals accused of helping finance or organize the operation. Several defendants have already received life sentences.

The latest proceedings come as Haiti prepares for a presidential election planned for December, which would be the country’s first presidential vote in about a decade. Continuing insecurity and political instability remain major challenges ahead of the election.
