A Florida family was injured in an accidental shooting after a handgun discharged inside a Deltona home while a man was preparing to visit a shooting range, authorities said. The man’s wife and their 4-year-old daughter were both wounded in the incident on Saturday, September 19.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home on Boxelder Street at about 9:50 a.m. after the man reported that his handgun had accidentally fired.
Mother and Daughter Injured by Single Gunshot
When deputies arrived, they found the father carrying his young daughter. The 4-year-old had suffered gunshot injuries to her chest and arm.
Her mother was inside the home with a towel covering a gunshot wound to her leg. Authorities said both the woman and child were conscious and alert when emergency responders reached the residence.
The girl was flown by Air One to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer for treatment, while her mother was transported to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital.
Father Told Deputies the Shooting Was Accidental
The man told investigators that he had been preparing to go to a shooting range and was attempting to clear his handgun when it discharged. According to his account, a single bullet struck both his wife and daughter.
Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said the evidence gathered during the investigation supports the explanation that the shooting was accidental.
The incident occurred in Deltona, approximately 30 miles northeast of Orlando.
No Criminal Charges Filed
The shooting shocked neighbors in the normally quiet area. Residents described the incident as distressing and unexpected.
Authorities have not announced any criminal charges in connection with the shooting. The investigation remains focused on the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge.
