A 17-year-old girl has been identified as the victim of a deadly sword attack at a school in central Sweden, as authorities continue investigating what led to the violent incident.
The attack took place Friday at Brinell School in Fagersta, northwest of Stockholm, while classes were underway. Police said an 18-year-old man armed with a sword was arrested following the assault. One student died and three others were injured, including two who suffered serious injuries.
17-Year-Old Student Killed in Fagersta School Attack
Swedish police confirmed Saturday that the person who died was a 17-year-old girl. Her family has been informed, but authorities have not released additional details about her identity.
The three other victims were also students. According to regional health authorities, two boys, aged 12 and 17, suffered serious injuries and required hospital treatment. A third person under the age of 18 sustained less serious injuries and was later discharged.
The incident prompted a major emergency response, with the school placed under lockdown while police secured the area and searched the building.
18-Year-Old Suspect Arrested as Investigation Continues
Police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the attack and are investigating the case as murder and attempted murder. Authorities said there was no indication that anyone else was involved.
The school’s principal said the suspect was a student at Brinell School. Police have also been examining his possible online activity as part of their effort to determine what may have motivated the attack.
Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses, collect evidence and examine digital material. Authorities have not yet established a definitive motive.
Sweden Mourns After Another School Attack
The Fagersta attack has sparked widespread concern across Sweden, particularly because it comes after several serious acts of violence at educational institutions in recent years.
Political leaders visited Fagersta and expressed condolences to the victim’s family and the injured students. Campaign activities ahead of Sweden’s September election were also paused by several political parties following the tragedy.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and understand why the school became the scene of such deadly violence.
