Florida Lobster Fishing Argument Leads to Serious Criminal Charges

A disagreement over a prized lobster diving location in South Florida has resulted in an attempted murder charge after authorities alleged that a diver’s air supply was intentionally shut off underwater.

The incident occurred on July 29 in Biscayne Bay during Florida’s recreational lobster season. Investigators say the confrontation escalated after two groups disputed access to a well-known lobster harvesting spot, putting one diver’s life at serious risk.

Authorities Say Diver’s Air Supply Was Deliberately Switched Off

According to investigators, 51-year-old Michael Joseph Simpson Jr. approached another boat and argued over the diving location before entering the water. Officials allege that he intentionally turned off the air supply feeding diver Hunter Coffer, who was using a surface-supplied breathing system commonly known as a “Brownie’s third lung.”

The diver reportedly surfaced disoriented and gasping for air after losing access to oxygen. Witnesses told investigators they saw the suspect swim away after the incident. Authorities described the situation as life-threatening and later charged Simpson with attempted felony murder.

Suspect Denies Allegations, Investigation Continues

After the incident, Simpson reportedly left the area but later surrendered to law enforcement. He was released after posting a $10,000 bond.

His attorney has strongly denied the accusations, arguing that available video footage does not place Simpson near the diver’s air equipment. The defense also claims several witnesses were not interviewed before charges were filed and believes the evidence will ultimately clear Simpson of wrongdoing.

The case remains under investigation as prosecutors and defense attorneys prepare for further court proceedings.
