Spain Cracks Down on Large-Scale Human Smuggling Operation
Spanish authorities have dismantled one of the largest human smuggling networks operating across the western Mediterranean, following a multi-country investigation that resulted in dozens of arrests and the seizure of boats, weapons, drugs, and cash.
The operation, coordinated with international law enforcement agencies, targeted an organized criminal group accused of transporting migrants from Algeria to Spain through dangerous sea routes. Officials say the network earned millions of euros by facilitating illegal crossings while exposing migrants to life-threatening conditions.
International Investigation Leads to 78 Arrests
According to investigators, the probe began in 2023 and involved cooperation between authorities in Spain, France, Portugal, Poland, and Europol. The coordinated raids concluded on June 16, leading to the arrest of 78 suspects, including 77 in Spain and one in Algeria.
Law enforcement officers also confiscated:
- 18 boats used in smuggling operations
- Illegal drugs
- Satellite communication devices
- A firearm
- More than €25,000 in cash
Officials estimate the criminal organization carried out at least 64 smuggling trips, transporting over 2,000 migrants across the Mediterranean while generating more than €24 million in illegal profits.
Migrants Faced Dangerous and Abusive Conditions
Investigators said the network relied on high-speed “ghost boats” to transport migrants across the sea, often under hazardous conditions. Authorities also reported evidence of violence, intimidation, and abuse against migrants during the journeys.
The operation resulted in the capture of four alleged leaders believed to have directed the organization’s activities. Authorities say dismantling the network is expected to significantly disrupt human smuggling operations along one of the Mediterranean’s busiest illegal migration routes.

Spanish and European authorities have intensified efforts to combat organized criminal groups involved in migrant smuggling as irregular migration across the Mediterranean remains a major security and humanitarian concern. Officials say international cooperation will continue to play a key role in identifying and dismantling cross-border trafficking organizations.
