New Mexico Sues U.S. Government to Obtain Unredacted Epstein Files for State Investigation

New Mexico Takes Legal Action Over Epstein Records

New Mexico has launched a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), demanding access to unredacted investigative files linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. State officials argue that the federal government’s refusal to share key documents is obstructing an ongoing criminal investigation into alleged offenses connected to Epstein’s former Zorro Ranch property near Santa Fe.

The complaint, filed in federal court, names Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche and seeks a court order requiring the DOJ to release records that state investigators believe are critical for identifying possible victims, witnesses, and anyone who may have committed crimes at the ranch.

State Says Federal Delays Are Hindering Justice

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez said the state’s investigation, reopened earlier this year, depends on federal cooperation that has not materialized. According to the lawsuit, the DOJ has either denied or failed to adequately respond to numerous requests for investigative materials despite an earlier information-sharing agreement between state and federal authorities.

State officials contend that the federal files contain thousands of references to both Zorro Ranch and New Mexico, making them essential to understanding the full scope of alleged criminal activity that may have occurred there. They argue that continued delays make it increasingly difficult to gather evidence and provide justice for survivors after so many years.

DOJ Cites Privacy Protections

The Department of Justice maintains that legal restrictions prevent it from publicly releasing information that could identify victims. While the agency says it has provided some documents and remains willing to assist within the limits of the law, New Mexico argues that the records released so far have been heavily redacted and offer little investigative value.

The lawsuit asks the court to compel the DOJ to provide the unredacted materials, asserting that greater transparency is necessary to advance the state’s investigation into allegations tied to Epstein’s New Mexico estate. The case could have significant implications for future investigations involving federal and state cooperation on high-profile criminal matters.
