French Court Delivers Verdict in High-Profile Livestream Death Case

A French court has sentenced two livestreamers to suspended prison terms following the death of internet personality Raphaël Graven, better known online as Jean Pormanove, during a widely discussed livestreaming incident.

The case attracted nationwide attention after Graven, 46, died in August 2025 while participating in an extended livestream that featured repeated acts of humiliation and physical abuse. Although prosecutors did not hold the two men responsible for causing his death, the court found them guilty of offenses related to violence and incitement to hatred.

Suspended Sentences and Social Media Ban

The Nice criminal court sentenced Owen Cenazandotti to a two-year suspended prison sentence along with a €15,000 fine. Safine Hamadi received an 18-month suspended sentence and was ordered to pay a €5,000 fine.

In addition to the financial penalties, both men have been prohibited from using social media platforms for six months.

Medical findings concluded that Graven’s death was most likely linked to his existing health condition rather than the physical assaults shown during the livestream. As a result, prosecutors did not pursue manslaughter charges.

Case Raises Concerns Over Dangerous Livestream Content

The incident sparked widespread public outrage in France and renewed concerns about the rise of extreme online content designed to attract views and donations.

Authorities described the livestream as part of a disturbing trend in which vulnerable individuals are subjected to degrading treatment for entertainment. The case has become one of France’s most significant legal actions involving so-called “trash streaming.”

The livestreaming platform where the broadcasts were hosted remains under separate investigation as officials examine whether enough was done to prevent harmful content from being streamed.

Calls for Stronger Online Regulation

The verdict has reignited discussions about the responsibilities of livestreaming platforms and content creators. French officials have continued to push for stricter oversight of online platforms to better protect users from violent and exploitative broadcasts.

The case is expected to influence future debates on digital platform accountability, livestream moderation, and the legal limits of online content creation.
