Tragic Police Shooting in Mississippi Claims Life of Toddler
A tragic incident in northern Mississippi has left a 1-year-old boy dead and a woman critically injured after law enforcement officers fired at a vehicle during a response to a reported shoplifting case.
The shooting happened Sunday in Senatobia, a city located about 40 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. Authorities said officers attempted to stop a vehicle after the occupants exited a Walmart store.
Officer Opened Fire After Vehicle Allegedly Moved Toward Police
According to investigators, officers were trying to stop the car when the driver allegedly drove in their direction and nearly struck one of the officers. In response, an officer fired at the vehicle.
Despite being hit by gunfire, the vehicle left the scene and later arrived at a nearby hospital. A 1-year-old boy, identified as Kohen Wiley, was pronounced dead. The child’s mother escaped without physical injuries, while another woman in the vehicle suffered serious wounds.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the case and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Family Seeks Answers as Investigation Continues
Relatives described the toddler as a cheerful child with a bright future ahead of him. Community advocates assisting the family said they are seeking legal support and answers regarding the deadly encounter.
Officials from the Senatobia Police Department stated that more information will be released as facts are confirmed. The Tate County Sheriff’s Office has not commented publicly on the incident.
Walmart expressed sadness over the events and said it is cooperating with authorities during the investigation.
