Former NFL Safety Darren Sharper Transferred to Community Confinement
Former NFL standout Darren Sharper has been moved from a federal correctional facility to a community confinement program, marking another step toward the completion of his prison sentence.
According to federal records, the 50-year-old former safety was transferred on May 27 from a prison in Ohio to a re-entry program overseen through Baltimore. Officials did not disclose whether he is living in home confinement or residing at a residential re-entry center.
Sharper’s projected release date remains December 27, 2028.
Convictions Stemmed From Multi-State Sexual Assault Cases
Sharper, a former Super Bowl champion and five-time Pro Bowl selection, pleaded guilty or no contest between 2015 and 2016 in cases involving women in Louisiana, California, Nevada, and Arizona. He also admitted guilt in federal court for participating in a conspiracy involving drugs used to facilitate sexual assaults.
The former NFL player was sentenced in 2016 to an 18-year prison term after authorities linked him to multiple assaults. He had been in custody since his arrest in 2014, and that time counted toward his sentence.
The case drew nationwide attention because of Sharper’s successful football career and the seriousness of the crimes.
Early Release Request Previously Rejected
Federal inmates can become eligible for community confinement as they approach the end of their sentences and complete rehabilitation programs.
Sharper’s attorneys previously sought a reduction in his sentence, arguing that he had maintained good behavior, completed educational courses, and needed treatment for possible chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and other brain injuries associated with years of football.
However, a federal judge denied the request in 2025, leaving his expected release date unchanged.
Two co-defendants connected to the case, Erik Nunez and former sheriff’s deputy Brandon Licciardi, have already completed their prison terms.
