A former San Francisco dentist is facing multiple criminal charges after prosecutors accused him of orchestrating a deadly ambush that left his tenant dead in the city’s Outer Sunset neighborhood. Authorities say the suspect allegedly used a fire as bait to draw the victim outside before carrying out the fatal shooting in the early morning hours.

Ex-Dentist Charged in Fatal San Francisco Shooting

According to investigators, 68-year-old Philippe Chagniot was arrested and charged in connection with the May 17 killing of 58-year-old Eric Bigone. Prosecutors allege the suspect arrived near the victim’s residence before dawn while dressed in dark clothing and wearing a mask.

Authorities claim surveillance footage showed the suspect attempting to disable nearby cameras by spray-painting them before placing burning materials on top of a vehicle parked outside the home.

When the victim reportedly stepped outside to deal with the fire, investigators say he was shot multiple times. Prosecutors allege the attack was carefully planned and carried out from a concealed position.

Investigators Detail Alleged Ambush

Law enforcement officials say the victim was approached from behind while trying to extinguish the flames. Court documents allege the suspect used a firearm equipped with a silencer and continued firing after the victim collapsed.

Police responded to reports of gunfire and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the investigation, detectives executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence and reportedly recovered evidence connected to the case.

Community Shocked by Arrest

The case has stunned residents who knew the suspect as a longtime neighborhood figure and former dental professional. Records indicate he had been licensed to practice dentistry in California for decades before his license expired in 2024.

Friends and family members remembered the victim as someone who had rebuilt his life after personal struggles. He was involved in youth boxing programs, recovery support efforts, and local music projects.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive for the killing. In addition to murder, the suspect faces charges related to arson, firearm possession, use of a silencer, and other weapons-related offenses. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence.
