KYIV, Ukraine — Russia launched one of its most intense aerial assaults on Kyiv in recent months, firing a combination of missiles and hundreds of drones, including the advanced Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile. Ukrainian officials reported multiple casualties and extensive damage to civilian infrastructure as explosions echoed across the capital overnight. The attack marked the latest escalation in the ongoing conflict and triggered strong reactions from international leaders.
Oreshnik Missile Used in Major Strike
According to Ukrainian and Russian officials, Moscow deployed the Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile during the attack, marking another battlefield use of the weapon since its introduction into the war. The missile is known for its extremely high speed and ability to challenge modern air defense systems.
The overnight barrage reportedly included around 90 missiles and hundreds of drones targeting Kyiv and nearby regions. Ukrainian air defense units intercepted many incoming threats, but several missiles and drones reached their intended targets, causing destruction across the city.
Civilian Areas and Infrastructure Damaged
Authorities said residential neighborhoods, schools, commercial facilities, and public infrastructure were affected by the strikes. Emergency crews responded to fires and structural damage in several districts while rescue operations continued throughout the day.
Officials reported fatalities and dozens of injuries as debris and blast waves impacted multiple locations. Residents sought shelter in underground stations and secure facilities during hours of air raid alerts.
International Condemnation and Rising Tensions
The attack drew criticism from European leaders and renewed calls for increased pressure on Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strike as a serious escalation and urged international partners to strengthen support for Ukraine.
Russia stated the operation was carried out in response to what it described as Ukrainian attacks on civilian-related targets in Russian-controlled territory, while Ukraine rejected those accusations. The latest exchange highlights the continuing escalation of hostilities and growing concerns over the use of advanced missile technology in the conflict.
