Bystander Recovering After Gunfire Erupts Near White House

A bystander wounded during a shooting outside a White House security checkpoint is reported to be in serious but stable condition, according to officials. The incident unfolded Saturday evening when a man allegedly opened fire near a secured area close to the White House.

Authorities said the injured individual suffered a gunshot wound that is not considered life-threatening. Investigators have not yet determined whether the bystander was struck by the suspect’s gunfire or during the exchange of shots that followed.

Suspect Fatally Shot After Opening Fire

Law enforcement officials identified the suspected gunman as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Maryland. Police said he began shooting toward a White House security checkpoint near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Secret Service officers immediately responded and returned fire. The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Officials confirmed that no Secret Service personnel were injured during the confrontation.

The area was quickly secured as emergency crews and federal agents responded to the scene. Temporary restrictions were placed around parts of the White House perimeter while investigators collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.

Investigation Continues Into Motive and Circumstances

Federal and local authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Officials have released limited information regarding the suspect’s motive and have not confirmed exactly how the bystander was injured.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House when the shooting occurred and was not harmed. Federal agencies, including the FBI and Secret Service, remain involved in the ongoing investigation.

Investigators are expected to review surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence as they work to establish a complete timeline of events.

Security Concerns Renewed

The incident has renewed attention on security measures surrounding the White House complex. It follows several recent security-related events in the nation’s capital, prompting continued scrutiny of protective protocols around high-profile government locations.
